Perfect Love - Devotional
“God has not given us a spirit of fear, but power, love and a sound mind.” -2 Timothy 1:7

One definition of fear is, “an unpleasant emotion caused by the belief that someone or something is dangerous, and likely to cause pain, or a threat.” The key word here is “belief.” In order to believe something, one must accept that it is true. Where you put your belief has everything to do with how you will handle fear when and if it finds its way to you.
The lie of fear wants to creep its way into our days. It wants to invade our hearts and set up camp in our minds. Fear is an emotion. Emotions need to be felt and acknowledged but not entertained. We can fight fear and win as we stay close to God and His promise. Fear is not from God, so we don’t have to accept it as our own.
The best way to fight fear is to face it. Psalm 56:3 says, “When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.” So here we see there will be times when we are afraid. But the key is to put our trust in God.
“But now, this is what the Lord says … fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine.” Isaiah 43:1 says He knows our name. He calls us and reminds us that we belong to Him. In Him we are “more than conquerors.” (Romans 8:37)
We may not be able to control the feelings that want to invade, but we can speak out the truth. Allow the promised peace of God to wash over us, for “perfect love drives out fear.” (1 John 4:18)
So cling to that perfect love. Cling to the promise and rest in the finished work of the cross. Rest knowing that you are safe and engraved in the palm of His hands. Rest in grace and allow His love to drive out the fear.
