Dreams of Playing Futbol Become a Reality in Bogota - Colombian Soccer Player Comes on Board
Bringing a soccer program (or “futbol” as it is referred to in most areas of the world) to Mission Life’s child centers has been a dream in the making for founder and CEO, Angel Galvis. Originally, Galvis planned to pursue it in 2020 but God asked him to wait as the pandemic unfolded. It wasn’t time.
While on a team mission trip this month to Bogota, Colombia, God confirmed the timing is now right! The team, along with leaders from our centers met with Colombian soccer player, Samir Rincon during their visit.
At the height of his career, Rincon was on his way to play for a team in Monaco but his plans changed abruptly when God stepped in and led him in a different direction. It is a powerful testimony we will share in the coming months.
Back in Bogota, Angel shared his vision with Rincon for the soccer program called Soccer Life. Statistics show that many children in Colombia between the ages of 7 and 18 years old use drugs. Soccer Life, a structured sports program, will provide a healthy and productive after school activity at Mission Life’s centers that not only teaches kids the rules of the game but it also gives them valuable life skills. For most children in Colombia and Rwanda, the opportunity to play futbol is a dream!
In addition to training, Soccer Life also teaches discipline, builds self-esteem and helps with cognitive development and mental strengthening to prepare the children for challenges and decisions they will make during their adolescent years.
After hearing about the program, Rincon is on board to join Mission Life to lead the first Soccer Life program at our center in Bogota! We are currently in the process of pooling funds and resources and with God’s provision, we hope to have the program up and running this Spring!
