Meeting Sophia - Jason's Journey to Colombia

Jason Snook has been Sophia’s sponsor for 3 years. Jason sent a video to Sophia around the holidays and this month he met up with the Mission Life team in Bogota, Colombia to meet her in person! Jason tells us what it was like to meet her and visit the center for the first time.

Signing up to sponsor a child from Colombia sounded great in theory. It made me feel joyful about giving back to people in need. As a new Christian, this sounded like such a noble cause. Listening to Angel Galvis speak at a school event 3 years ago, I was inspired to join the movement. However, the financial commitment every month is really where my generosity ended.

I have been traveling the world for the last 4 months. While planning my trip, I realized that I was going to be in Colombia right around the time the Mission Life team was traveling to its child center in Bogota. When I came to Colombia, everything began to make sense in my brain, and more importantly, I began to feel it in my heart.

Jason interacts with some of the children at Mission Life’s child center in Bogota, Colombia.

When I met Sophia for the first time, my heart melted. Here was an actual human being, a young 12 year old girl who goes to school, has friends, etc. Interacting with these kids of all ages reminded me of myself when I was that age when you’re full of so much energy and potential. I began to realize that we get to play a part in providing an opportunity to help that potential flourish. Toward the end of our time at the center, I also realized that these kids are the ones helping to maximize the potential that God plays in my life.

I truly hope that all sponsors who support children through Mission Life are blessed to take the chance to meet their child and interact with them. Before my experience in Colombia, I felt good about the donations I was sending to help Sophia. Now, I have witnessed the power of what sponsorship can actually mean in my life, and for the lives of so many others. Experiences like this are what makes my world travel come to life..

Mission Life is going back to Colombia this fall on another mission trip to our center in Genova and we are looking for a few more people to join our team! Learn more about the trip here.
