How Coffee Became the Catalyst for One Couple’s Purpose

Ryan and Jamie Getchell are living out God’s mission for their lives. They’re the new owners of a niche coffee shop called, “The Nest Family Cafe” in Londonderry, NH. While the coffee and food are delicious, the cafe is having an even greater impact. The heart of the Getchell’s plan is providing a comfortable space where parents and their young children can find community and where parents can get a much deserved break.

From their own experience raising 3 young children, they’ve thought of everything a parent might need. In addition to the play space, there is a feeding room, a changing table and the Blessing Corner where parents can donate or find supplies they may have run out of. Jamie is overwhelmed by the love that pours out from the Blessing Corner. She says sometimes she goes home at the end of the day and cries happy tears.

“A mom came in the other day looking for formula. She had been driving around for 2 hours trying to find this formula. It was a special kind she couldn’t get in any of the stores for her son and she is trying to adopt her son so she can’t breastfeed and she was able to find it here,” Jamie says.

The formula was donated by another parent.

The Getchell’s calling to open this kind of cafe didn’t happen overnight. If you asked them a decade ago if this was God’s purpose for their lives, they’d probably agree that God hadn’t revealed that part of the plan yet. Ryan was climbing the ladder in the tech industry and Jamie was an analyst for the FBI. They had a comfortable life.

In 2019, the Getchell’s met Mission Life Founder, Angel Galvis and heard his story about leaving the financial industry to answer God’s call to create Mission Life. They started volunteering with the organization. Ryan used his gifts to get the website up and running and helped lay the groundwork for Mission Life’s vision to connect children and sponsors through video messages. Jamie also helped the non-profit in various ways including how to navigate grants and she currently serves as a Board member.

Ryan says, “When covid happened and I was thinking about quitting my job and potentially starting this business with Jamie, Angel’s voice and his story really started resonating in my head because I could see how passionate and happy Angel was about what he’s doing. It wasn’t about the money. It was about the impact he was having.”

“A lot of times you’re defined as a male by how much money you make and how much is in your bank account. It's just so empty and when you really start focusing on the things that bring meaning to your life, you become wealthy in other areas. God knows what he’s doing when he puts those things on your heart. He really pulls you away from those idols and focuses you on kingdom building and then it just becomes so much more fulfilling,” says Ryan.

In September, the Getchell’s are taking their purpose global. They’re teaming up with Mission Life to highlight 15 children in Colombia who are in need of sponsorship on their customer facing whiteboard. The child center in Villavicencio is fairly new and the program isn’t yet sustainable. They need more sponsors. The Getchell’s cherish their relationship with Sammy, a girl their family sponsors from Colombia and they’re looking to share that opportunity with other families.

“We’re going to make it interactive so our customers can take the child they sponsored and maybe put them into a nest or something so they can make it fun for the kids and make it a family experience so they can show their kids why this is important. We want to be able to use what we’re doing here and bring it full circle back to Mission Life,” Jamie says.

We’re so excited to see the Getchell’s living out their God given purpose to serve their local community! Stop by The Nest Family Cafe to check it out for yourself!
